NOT MOM

My mother is a traditional Chinese woman who, due to her career and family experiences, also embodies a degree of modernity and open-mindedness. This interplay between tradition and modernity, selfhood and devotion, makes her truly unique.

After returning to China in 2022 following nearly six years in New York, I found myself feeling somewhat distant from my mother, as though she had become unfamiliar. Yet, I was eager to restore the close bond we once shared. I began spontaneously photographing her and then used editing software to create collages—transforming her into a giant, a child, or even a bizarre “hybrid.” Through this process, I sought to rediscover the image of my mother in my mind.

Interestingly, the act of creation brought us closer. She often laughed heartily as she looked at the edited photos I made of her, turning the project into a shared experience that deepened our connection.
